UK’s close ‘strategic relationship’ with BP revealed

As part of Culture Unstained’s ongoing investigative work, we recently uncovered new details of BP’s close ‘strategic relationship’ with the UK government.

The emails and other documents showed…

  • How BP uses its sponsorship deals with cultural institutions – notably the British Museum – as platforms for influencing ministers and policy-makers.
  • A letter from BP CEO Bob Dudley including a personal handwritten note, imploring Secretary of State Greg Clark to attend the annual ‘Oil and Gas Climate Initiative’ (OGCI) press conference in London, what is considered one of the fossil fuel industry’s most blatant “greenwash” activities.
  • That individual staff members within the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy are assigned as ‘day-to-day’ contacts for BP, Shell and Statoil.
